Flood Risk Management Skills Development Scheme

The Flood Risk Management Skills Development Scheme is aimed at ensuring that all new Flood Risk Management Engineers have the key skills they need to carry out their work in a competent and effective manner.

Training programmes are delivered through a variety of media (e.g. distance learning, classroom based, coaching, experiential, tutorial etc.). A lot of training will take place on-the-job with a designated coach who will demonstrate how to undertake relevant tasks and supervise trainees.

How long will it take?

Depending upon previous experience, it will take between six and nine months for a new starter to develop the full set of key competencies for the role. We encourage our employees to take responsibility for their own professional development.

Formal Learning

Most of the Environment Agency's formal flood defence training is provided by the Flood Hazard Research Centre at Middlesex University – the international centre of excellence for flood hazard studies. All of the training attracts CATS points.

Links to professional institutions

We have strong links with both the Institution of Civil Engineers [ICE] and Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management [CIWEM], and we encourage professional staff to become chartered.
