North West
In the North West Region we have the full range of challenges faced by Flood Risk Management. These include facing climate change issues, through to regeneration projects in our major cities and providing increased flood protection levels in Carlisle, which was hit by devastating flooding in January 2005.
There is inescapable evidence that our climate is getting warmer and wetter and that extreme weather events will become more frequent and dangerous. Our teams carry out work to identify the boundaries for flood risk mapping which requires the use of skilled techniques to plot and maintain increasingly accurate data. Also a programme of Catchment Flood Management and Shoreline Management Plans is now being delivered. This will enable us to work with natural processes to reduce flood risk in the future and contribute to sustainable development.
The redevelopment of ‘brown field’ sites, particularly in the south of the Region, provides great opportunities to improve Flood Risk Management levels of service whilst at the same time create enhanced environmental and recreational features. This comes through the promotion of our own works and influencing the works of others.
Our major investments in 2006/07 in the North West Region include the provision of better defences at Carlisle, Lower Lancaster and on the Fylde coast.
