Midlands
The Midlands Region covers the catchments of the rivers Severn and Trent. It has an area of around 22000 square km and a population of 8.26m. Approximately 2300 square km and 120,000 properties are believed to be at risk of flooding from a 1% probability flood event.
The Trent Catchment includes the major conurbations of the West Midlands as well as those of Leicester, Nottingham and Derby in the East Midlands. A number of flood defence schemes have been constructed in the past protecting large numbers of properties but there is now a need for some of these to be replaced or upgraded.
The region has a varied set of Flood Risk Management issues. Strategies produced following the major flooding in 1998 and 2000 have identified major capital improvements across the Region. In particular over £150m worth of work has been identified in our Lower Trent Area based in Nottingham over the next 10 years.
There is a growing need to recruit and develop competent staff with skills to carry out policies, initiatives and promote schemes which enable the Agency to help the public with the challenge from the increasing threat of flood risk.
