People from a wide range of backgrounds, with various levels of experience have joined us across all areas of our Flood Risk Management work. In their words, this is what they do and why they chose the Environment Agency to further their career.

Increasing sea storms. Heavier rainfall. Rising sea levels.

Mark Todd
Technical Specialist – Flood Risk Mapping and Data Management

‘I joined the Environment Agency 2004 after emigrating to the UK in 2003. I originally completed an honours degree in South Africa. I spent a few years working for a range of different ‘environmental’ areas including a year and a half with a non-profit environmental consultancy.

After various contract positions in Local Authorities in and around London, I was employed as a Strategic Planning Officer at the Thames Barrier, and have since be appointed as a Technical Specialist in the Flood Risk Mapping and Data Management Team.

My work focus is mainly project management of Flood Mapping and related projects for the Thames tidal operational area. Part of this work also includes assisting other teams with certain technical aspects related to tidal flood risk management. The Environment Agency is a great work environment to be in: you are exposed to new industry developments, learn to develop a more holistic approach to work, and are able to work with a vibrant, enthusiastic and very knowledgeable group of people.

The importance of managing flood risk in London cannot be overstated. To be in a position to help guide further work and improve our ability to plan and manage issues, such as climate change, is a rewarding career opportunity. I like the feeling that I am able to influence rather than react to national and local issues, and that I am making a positive difference to the environment. This doesn’t mean that we are detached from reality but that we are engaging with local and regional stakeholders to make a sustainable improvement.’
