People from a wide range of backgrounds, with various levels of experience have joined us across all areas of our Flood Risk Management work. In their words, this is what they do and why they chose the Environment Agency to further their career.
Increasing sea storms. Heavier rainfall. Rising sea levels.
Geoff Bell
Area Flood Risk Manager
‘I am Flood Risk Manager for the West Area of the Thames Region. Based in Wallingford (half way between Oxford and Reading), I have a department of almost 50 staff, looking after the River Thames and its tributaries – from Cirencester in the West to Henley in the East.
Together, we aim to reduce the risk of flooding for as many people living in our Area as possible. This will mean ensuring that where there are flood defences, we inspect them regularly and make sure they are properly maintained.
For communities with no defences but at risk of flooding we see if a scheme is viable. Where it is, we contribute to the design and construction of a scheme; where it isn't we work with those at risk to minimise the impact of flooding.
This will include issuing flood warnings and making sure that people know what to do when they receive a warning. We know we cannot always prevent flooding but we can prepare for it.
I am looking for experienced Engineers, Hydrologists and Environmental Scientists to join us as technical specialists and help in this work.’
