At least £500 million investment a year for the next 80 years.
Flood risk management is arguably the most important project in the UK or Europe and set to grow in importance as climate change, sea level rise and urbanisation starts to bite even more. Even now, there are five million people at risk of flooding, with the possibility that the number at ‘high risk’ rises from 1.5 million to 3.5 million by 2080. There are 2.2 million homes and 185,000 businesses at risk from flooding in England and Wales. In economic terms, that equates to some £200 billion worth of property, land and assets.
Thankfully, the Environment Agency has a powerful, long-term vision. A vision that you could help us achieve. A vision that could do amazing things for your career. A vision that could secure the future of England and Wales.
Flooding has always been a hot topic for us and we spend around half of our entire annual budget on Flood Risk Management. Not to mention spending time and resources informing and educating people; warning people; delivering and managing flood defences; working with nature to improve habitats; as well as assisting during emergencies. It's a strategy that already prevents about £3.4 billion of flood damage each year and protects and improves the environment. However, following high-profile floods at Boscastle and Carlisle, we've naturally stepped up a pace – increasing our funding by £150 million to around £500 million.
All of which creates exciting opportunities for people with a background in civil or environmental engineering, geography, hydrology or construction. There are all kinds of roles across the country – everything from strategic planning to flood incident management. However you join us, you can expect a huge variety of projects and the chance to set a legacy for generations to come, and you'll be working alongside many of the country's leading professionals so you're guaranteed to give your career a real boost too.
